Discussing Qualcomm Survey on Technology Impacts and Kids

A little while back I meet with a team from Qualcomm, the maker of the Snapdragon processor for mobile devices, to discuss the results of their recent survey on "How much technology is changing the way we raise our children" and more important, What parent’s should know about the right processor when choosing a mobile device.


As a parent with a child who started using a smartphone before he could walk, this survey and it's finding hit very close to home for me. I confess that I used my smartphone and tablet as a pacifier/distraction with son. I think most parents I know can say the same. Technology has moved from something we did in the "computer room" to being a third hand that is a part of our everyday life. A third hand that our children are also holding and utilizing along with us.

This was part of the discussion I had with the Qualcomm team as they shared about their survey conducted by Ipsos. A few survey results shared during our meeting included

• Baby’s first smartphone. Among smartphone or tablet owners who are parents of children 13 or under, 50 percent said they think the appropriate age for a child to own his or her own smartphone is between 8 and 13. Meanwhile, 45 percent said they think the appropriate age is between 14 and 18, and 5 percent said they think the appropriate age is under 8.

• Unsupervised behavior. Among smartphone or tablet owners who are parents of children 13 or under…
  o 39 percent said their children have called one of their contacts without their knowledge
  o 36 percent said their children have downloaded an application without their knowledge
  o 13 percent said their children have made a purchase without their knowledge
  o 9 percent said their children have dialed 911 without their knowledge

• Keep it private. Only half (50 percent) of smartphone and tablet owners who are parents of children 13 or under said they have talked to their children about protecting their privacy while using a mobile device.

• Devices are slowly leaking into classrooms. Among smartphone and tablet owners who are parents of children 13 or under, 15 percent said their children use a mobile device in the classroom.

• Smartphones and tablets – the new pacifier. More than half (53 percent) of smartphone and tablet owners who are parents of children 13 or under said they have used their mobile device to calm down their children.

This survey clearly shows smartphones, tables and other types of technology are clearly embedded in our lives. Since these devices are being used by families in so many ways, it's important that the inside hardware can stand up to our lives.

We ended our meeting, we with me learning that Snapdragon processors by Qualcomm, power and enable more than 420 smartphones and tablets, including a large portion of Android devices and all Windows Phone smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy SIII, Nokia Lumia 920 and the Motorola RAZR HD.

Since I've had real life experinces with mobile devices using the Snapdragon processors by Qualcomm, it was pretty awesome to meet the team and learn more about the company directly.
